First Amendment

The First Amendment is as follows:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The First Amendment gives us the right to free speech. We hear a lot about our right to free speech and Americans take their right to free speech very seriously.

The part that is less well understood is the religion clause of the First Amendment. The federal government can make no law which puts a state government in place. This means that a law which is based in religious law has no place in the federal government.
